Operation Armilla - Gulf Patrol 1981
In 1980 war broke out
between Iraq and Iran. In response to the increased
danger to British shipping and other British
interests, Royal Navy warships were sent to the
Gulf and at least one has remained there ever
since. This was called Operation Armilla, or the
Gulf patrol as it is more widely known. HMS Ardent
deployed to the Gulf in December 1980. Ardent is
pictured here escorting the British tanker Mary R
Koch in the Gulf of Oman in January 1981.
